Take a break from the city life…

How do you pamper yourself in the chaos that is Manhattan?

Although New Yorkers are always in their own world, sometimes its very necessary to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city. Elizabeth Banks recently interviewed with TimeOut New York and dished out her insight on New York spa life. Check out a couple of awesome photos featured on TimeOut that were our favorites here at KLARA Beauty Lab.

When asked which type of spa treatment she enjoys best, Elizabeth Banks says,

I recently had an amazing mud wrap [in Park City, Utah]. The aesthetician asked if I was claustrophobic, which made me wonder if I really knew what a wrap entailed. She said she was going to wrap me with foil and cover my eyes, which makes some people feel like they’re in a coffin. [Laughs] I told her I thought I’d be okay, and I was.

When asked what was the wackiest treatment she ever recieved, Elizabeth Banks says,

The most ridiculous experience I’ve had was in Budapest. It’s known for its bathhouses, and I’d never been to one of those. I had some giant Hungarian smack me with palm fronds. It was so painful [Laughs], but I was too embarrassed to say, “Please stop!”

When asked what other ways she likes to relax in NYC, Elizabeth Banks says,

I love sitting in the penguin exhibit at the Central Park Zoo and watching them glide around, especially on days when no one’s there. I’m a huge fan of MoMA, especially since it’s been renovated. I love exploring the sculpture garden or having tea there. I’m also a big High Line enthusiast.

Skin Cleansing 101

Posted by with No Comments

The simple rule of beauty is that clean skin is healthy and beautiful skin, but picking the right cleansing routine amidst the cacophony of washes, wipes, masks, scrubs, and exfoliators calling out for your attention can be daunting and confusing at the same time. A delicate balance needs to be striked between over drying and sapping your skin of natural oils and eliminating dirt and make-up agents that can lead to acne and inflammation. So we at KLARA Beauty Lab decided to simplify your skin cleansing choices with our insights into what to look for in a cleansing routine.

We recommend a facial cleanser in the night to wash away the day’s dirt and grime, an exfoliating scrub every 3 days to dislodge the blackheads and dirt particles that seep under your skin, and a facial mask once a week to further clean, remove dead skin and improve your skin tone. Some facial toner buffs and count on it to wipe away residual dirt from the skin but many beauty experts feel otherwise. They say that if your cleanser is effective then you don’t need a toner so this is what you may do instead… use a mild facial wash, then follow up with a toner and if specks of dirt shows up on the cotton pad then its use is justified. On the days when you wear make-up, use a cleansing wipe or milk to get rid of the make-up first before the face wash. But the thumb-rule is not to apply everything together, which means leave out the toner if you have already used a make-up dissolving wipe. Every 2-3 days, switch the wash for the scrub, paying attention to problem-prone areas like the nose and the chin where you tend to collect blackheads or white heads and wash away with lukewarm water. Using deep cleansing masques are also helpful in clearing out congestion in the pores.

Ask your beauty therapist to recommend a daily cleansing regimen that is manageable yet effective. Nothing beats regular facials with extractions when it comes to thorough skin cleansing and addressing other concerns.

Wake up to KLARA’s beauty ritual…

splash of water

We all wish we could get out of bed in the morning wide awake and as enthusiastic as the women in the television commercials; unfortunately for most of us we peel ourselves out of bed half awake. I asked KLARA to share easy-to-do remedies any of us can do at home to help us not look so helpLESS in the morning…

  • Facial Moisturizer
  • Facial Cleanser
  • Sink & Water
  • 2 Metal Spoons
  • Chamomile Tea Bags

Here are Klara’s DIY beauty tips to wake you up in the morning!

  • When washing your face in the morning, start off with warm water. You are using the warm water to remove any excess debris from your face that you didn’t remove the night before and may have collected on your face or naturally secreted throughout the night. Make sure the water is warm, not hot, so that it doesn’t dry your skin. Now use your facial cleanser to wash your face. It is important that you are using the proper cleanser for your skin type. and condition. If you don’t have or know what cleanser is right for your skin, schedule a free consultation & KLARA will tell you which of the products she sells is right for you!

  • Be sure to rinse your face off with cold water. This splash of cold water plays a crucial role in helping your skin feel awake and refreshed. When we are asleep our body functions at a lower speed, so by jolting your skin with cold water you play a role in speeding up the process.

  • Although as a small girl Klara never understood why her grandmother would literally smack on her moisturizer in the morning, now Klara understands there was more to the picture. Slapping on your facial moisturizer raises your blood circulation making product absorption better.  When applying your facial moisturizer slap it onto your face. By waking up your cells, you are also allowing your cells to rejuvenate themselves.

  • Another common morning side effect is puffy or swollen eyes. Klara suggests an easy remedy for this unwanted occurrence. First put 2 spoons in the freezer and once they chill place them on your eye lids for a bit to bring down the swelling. Secondly, after boiling 2 chamomile tea bags in water, place them in the refrigerator to cool down, and then leave these tea bags on your eyelids for a few minutes. The calming sensation of the chamomile will sooth your eyes and get rid of any irritation. Great trick for those of you who spend hours in front of the computer!

Discounted Beauty Products: Are They Safe?

Posted by with No Comments

Every once in a while we get tempted to buy a half price face cream from an online discount site or discounted products that are just about to be pulled off the drugstore shelves. But these cheap beauty products can come at a price. In buying these products you can be compromising on important factors like the expiry date or the conditions in which they were stored. A jar of cream that was stored in the melting heat or a bottle of SPF that is at the end of its product life span can wreck havoc on your skin, making you spend a ton of money on fixing your skin problems.

Both organic products or those that use chemical preservatives come with a limited life-span after which they are unstable and lose their beneficial properties. The same problem occurs when products are not stored at the optimum storage temperature. Outdoor mailboxes and delivery trucks involved in selling products online are not at all helpful, generally changing the consistency of the gels and lotions. Exposure to UV rays are the worst. According to some dermatologists, since our skincare routines have become more complex, involving the use of multiple products, the one that has outlived its life span competes with the better product to take effect on your skin and loses out to the superior product.

This is not to say that you should never buy discounted products. However, use your discretion. If your favorite store is running a 20% off storewide holiday discount, that’s probably a better time to buy a value pack of your beauty cabinet essentials rather than going online to avail a year round discount. While an expired nail polish won’t hurt you as much, some other face and body products will. So we encourage you to smarten up about beauty deals. Consult your trusted aesthetician or skin therapist if you need more advice.

The Perfectly Kissable Lips…

Posted by with 1 Comment

KLARA shares her expert tips on how to have perfectly kissable lips this Valentine’s Day…

kissable lips

With Valentine’s Day rapidly approaching, who doesn’t want to have flawless lips to sport that sweet pink, or seductive red lip? Or maybe you’re going for a natural look and just want your lips to be silky smooth for the occasion. It’s tough to keep your lips soft in the dry cold winter air, but with KLARA’s great EASY at home remedy, you can make sure your lips are…

perfectly kissable!

Wearing lipstick or lipgloss over rough or chapped lips is never a good look! They are meant to compliment your lips, and unfortunately they do not cover up any unfortunate lip defects. Matte lip colors and clear gloss especially emphasize even the slightest flaws. The following tips are simple, yet extremely effective ways to make sure you have the perfect kiss for your honey this Valentine’s day:

  • Drink plenty of water to prevent chapping. In the cold, dry winter months, your skin loses moisture to the atmosphere. Water not only keeps your skin, including the delicate skin of your lips, hydrated, but it also helps to keep your system flushed from toxins and waste.
  • Invest in a humidifier. Dry air in your home can also take away from your skins moisture. If you cannot invest in an air-moistening humidifier, try heating a damp towel to do the trick!
  • Exfoliate your lips. If you want smooth lips it is necessary to exfoliate them, as you do with the skin of your face and body. KLARA suggests that you mix some honey and sugar to perform a gentle scrub.
  • After you brush your teeth with your toothbrush and toothpaste, day and night… Rinse off your toothbrush and pucker your lips as you gently massage your lips in a circular motion with your clean toothbrush.
  • Apply lip balm. Be sure to apply lip balm to keep your lips moisturized.
  • Last but definitely not least, come visit KLARA Beauty Lab for lip augmentation with dermal filler. This safe and noninvasive procedure, contours and fills your lips instantaneously! For more information on this procedure visit our ‘Botox | Filler Lab’ page.

Try to avoid these common mistakes:

  • Be careful with lip plumbers! Lip plumping products often include spices, such as pepper, paprika or other aggravating ingredients, that can irritate your lips and the skin around your lips. Those voluptuous lips are not so precious if your mouth is irritated all night. Not to mention your  lover may not be fond of the tingling sensation.
  • Avoid drinking red wine at dinner. Red wine can stain your lips and teeth. Other foods may have the same unwanted staining effect so be sure to use your bottom teeth, and let your tongue do the work!

Say Hello To These Foods For Gorgeous & Glowing Skin!

Posted by with 7 Comments

Those who desire youthful and healthy looking skin, have to watch what they put into their mouth. There is a strong correlation between the quality and luster of your skin and your diet, with absolutely no ifs and buts here. Just as essential fats and antioxidants replenish and protect your skin; greasy fries, sodas and alcohol dehydrate and suffocate your skin. Since eating right is the prescription for good skin, here’s our pick of the best beautiful skin foods for you:

Green tea: The next best skin elixir after water, green tea reduces sun damage by quenching free radicals and reducing inflammation caused by UV rays. Also the the topical green tea polyphenols slow down signs of aging. Drink 2-3 cups of green tea a day and also consider applying green tea based formulations under your sunscreen to shield your skin.

Berries: Blueberries, blackberries, strawberries…toss plenty of these antioxidant rich berries in your cereals and salads. Loaded with antioxidant compounds they are very effective in neutralizing damaging free radicals that lead to skin cell damage and premature skin aging. Plus berries help the body manufacture collagen, which makes the skin supple and smooth.

Carrot: These are high sources of beta-carotene that get converted to vitamin A and C in the body…. While A aids in the development of skin cells, maintenance of skin health, and protects skin from dryness, C mops up free radicals. Eating carrots can act as a natural sunscreen, providing a SPF factor of 2 to 4. This is a good reason to devour an occasional slice of carrot cake!

Tomato: Every skin type benefits from this anti-oxidant powerhouse that boasts of Vitamin C, K, A, and lycopene. Lycopene, the pigment responsible for its red color, is the most efficient quencher of free radicals and naturally raises the sun protection factor of the skin. For a topical skin treatment try this… Mix tomato juice and honey and use it as a mask on your face and neck, and wash off after about 15 minutes

Avocado: Loaded with good mono saturated fats and omega 3-fatty acids, they keep skin plump and youthful looking. Avocados contain both vitamin C and vitamin E, which act well together as a powerful skin anti-aging combination.

Dark greens: Be it broccoli, spinach or kale…the darker the better for your skin. Rich in vitamins these ensure faster skin renewal to keep you looking fresh and blemish-free.

Fish: Shellfish, tuna, salmon… this is the holy trinity of good skin, being rich in essential good fatty acids and omega 3s, these keep your skin moisturized, decrease the occurrence of clogged pores, and improves elasticity. They strengthen skin membrane, keeping water in and harmful substances out. Salmon is also high in selenium, which improves various skin problems and overall skin health.

Brazilian nuts: An excellent source of the mineral selenium, it fights the deterioration of collagen and elastin in your skin. The anti-oxidants contribute to anti-aging of skin and good overall skin health.

Dairy: Direct source of Vitamin A, low-fat dairy products are a good addition to your diet for overall skin health and anti-aging care.

Pomegranate: Good source of vitamin C, it is necessary for natural skin growth and freshness. Also regulates sebum production and growth of the cells and hair follicles, so a deficiency causes acne and skin flares.

So to keep your skin looking radiant and glowing feed skin from within. You are what you eat, so eat beautifully!
