Botox is a well-known brand name for a medicinal form of botulinum toxin type A, also known as onabotulinumtoxinA. When injected in small doses into specific muscles, botox acts as a muscle relaxant with effects that can last for several months, which gives you an effect of smoothing the lines and relaxing the treated area, so you do not work this muscle and it is not folding the skin with its strength. Botox is done as a remedy for existing wrinkles and lines and as a preventive measure before the lines appear in the areas where your muscles activity is strong. Botox is most effective on wrinkles that haven’t quite set — “dynamic” wrinkles that appear while you’re moving your face, such as when you frown.
There are two forms of the botulinum toxin medicine, Botox and Botox Cosmetic. Botox is used to treat certain medical problems. Botox Cosmetic is used to improve facial wrinkles. But you may hear both referred to as simply Botox.
Our doctor will go over your medical history and medication use, as well as explain the possible risks and results to help you determine if Botox is right for you.
If you are a great candidate and you decide to receive Botox or dermal fillers (Restylane, Juvederm) injections, you should remember about these few
- Prepare yourself before treatment. Because you are more likely to get a bruise at the site of the needle injection if you are taking aspirin or ibuprofen, you should also tell your doctor — before treatment — about any supplements you are taking, an anti-inflammatory, even if they are “natural” because some (such as fish oil pills, gingko biloba, or vitamin E) also thin blood. Your doctor may ask you not to use those supplements for a couple of days before your treatment.
- Start small. Ask your doctor for a more natural, expressive look. Your doctor can adjust the dose accordingly.
- Do not receive injections at Botox Parties. Spas and parties are fun, but not for injections. Alcohol, crowded place and loud music does not go along well with this procedure. These wrinkle treatments should only be done by a doctor who is board-certified and trained in Botox injections.
Loss of shape and definition creates changing impressions of beauty as lines and wrinkles and skin folds take over. Dermal filler treatments can restore fullness, contour and smoothness that have been lost with time. This safe, natural substance is a cosmetic, dermal filler that is made from the body’s own material –“hyaluronic acid” and provides instantaneous, long-lasting natural enhancement. It creates a beauty lift without surgery.
Our skin is the largest organ of our body and is comprised of three layers – outer, middle and subcutaneous (deep inner) layer. Along with collagen, hyaluronic acid plays a very important role in keeping skin healthy. Hyaluronic acid helps to bind the moisture/water which is necessary to keep skin full and prevent dryness and wrinkling.
As we age and lose collagen and hyaluronic acid, our skin loses the ability to hold moisture so skin folds and lines and wrinkles form readily. This, along with smoking, alcohol consumption, sun-bathing and poor nutritional habits, to name a few, contribute to loss of beauty during the aging process.
The Dermis (middle layer) of skin functions as the skin’s support structure and contains the collagen, elastin and other biological substances – including hyaluronic acid. As we age the production of these substances decreases and the elastin fibers become looser and gather in formations, visible as formation of wrinkles, fine lines and folds.

Botox vs. Dermal fillers
BOTOX® is a natural, purified protein that is used to block nerve transmission and relax muscles that usually contract causing wrinkles and folds.
Dermal fillers enlarge, fill or enhance certain areas that need more volume.
Depending upon goals, personal needs and concerns – patients choose the treatment that will best meet their needs. Patients have been very pleased after receiving treatment with both products. Botox and Filllers often compliment each other as a nonsurgical treatment for wrinkles and folds.
Our doctor will discuss with you which areas you’re the most concerned about and then determine which procedure, Botox or Dermal Filler (Juvederm or Restylane), is right for you.
